**ALWAYS CONSULT THE STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR FIRST RESPONDERS**

 

The Firefighters of FBVFD shall attempt to be certified in CPR and First Aid through the American Heart Association [AHA]. Training Officer shall try to help each Fire Fighter become competent in as many areas of fire fighting and safety as possible, including First Aid and CPR. The Training Officer shall try to make this training available through various AHA Instructors in Scott County. The Training Officer shall strive to obtain training for all FBVFD Department Personnel in the following areas:

First Aid

Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation

EMS - First Responder

EMS - EMT and higher

The Training Officer shall keep a record of what is taught, who is present, and when the training took place, and a copy of all Official Certification Records. See Chapter 9 of this SOG for further information on standards of training.

CPR - and - First Aid

are Areas That All FBVFD Firefighters should have Basic Knowledge

The Training Officer [TO] shall attempt to obtain training for all fire fighters and junior members in these major areas:

CPR

First Aid

First-Aid Standards for FBVFD Firefighter / Firefighter I

The current minimum standards for Virginia Department of Fire Programs are as follows:

CPR & First Aid [AHA] for members certified as Firefighter I and II

These members should not allow their AHA CPR card to elapse.

These members may provide basic CPR and First Aid to Firefighters and Victims

The current minimum standards for FBVFD members who are not certified Firefighter I or II through VDFP, are as follows:

CPR & First Aid [AHA] for FBVFD member Firefighters if made available by the Department

Our Firefighters should attempt to be certified in CPR and First Aid through the AHA. They should become certified as quickly as possible. This certification will allow firefighters to serve other firefighters on the fire ground. CPR and First Aid can also be learned to serve victims on the fire ground or 10-50 scenes, when no other EMS personnel are present or are delayed in arriving on-scene.

CPR-First Aid Equipment

All firefighters should ask for nitrile gloves for Body Substance Isolation [ BSI]. The Fire Department shall provide CPR shields if Certified through AHA. This Department will provide CPR shields and BSI protection such as gloves as funding becomes available, for any firefighter who is certified in CPR-First Aid, EMS-First Responder, and EMT. This Department shall provide at least one Basic First Aid Kit. Currently, there is one Basic first Aid Kit in Brush 705, a larger kit in 705, and two First Responder kits. First Responder kits are kept in the POV's of EMS-First Responders and are brought to the scene. See below for Minimum Standards. Attempts will be made to ensure that each truck receives a Basic First Aid Kit, including Burn Management Adjuncts. Equipment that this Department makes available for certified Firefighters shall include:

CPR shields

Latex or Nitrile gloves

Burn Management Adjuncts / Cold packs / Burn blanket material

Current Minimum Standards for EMS-First Responder at FBVFD

Our Department has is officially an EMS-First Resonder. FBVFD is now an EMS-Agency. Firefighters who become certified in EMS-First Responder will be called upon to provide Basic First Aid to Firefighters and to Victims. EMS-First Responders will be officially recognized through our Department. Their knowledge will be relied upon to help firefighters who become injured or civilians who are injured and need treatment. The First Responders are limited to their certification level while treating patients. It is our plan to continue to provide EMS-First Responder and EMT services to our community.

Current Equipment Standards for First Responders and First Aid Bags found in Trucks

Our firefighters who are certified through the Virginia Department of Emergency Services as First Responders shall be issued a basic First Responder kit. It will include:

Triangular bandages
Burn blanket material
Saline solution
Bandades
Tape
Air-way Adjuncts ‡
Gause
Bandages
Cold pack
Shears
Antibacterial ointment
BP cup
Stethoscope
Dressing/Pads
Other

 

Current Minimum Standards for EMT at FBVFD

Firefighters who become a certified EMT will be called upon to provide Basic Life Support to Firefighters and to Victims. FBVFD is now an EMS-Agency. Therefore, EMT's will be officially recognized through our Department. Their knowledge and skills will be relied upon to help firefighters who become injured or civilians who are injured and need treatment.

Air-way adjuncts, oxygen, IV fluids, drugs, AED's, other defibrillators, and other traditional EMT services/skills shall be provided at this time [06/25/06] by EMT's. Our Emergency Medical Technicians shall be allowed to provide these services through the auspices of our Operational Medical Director {OMD}.

Our firefighters who are certified through the Virginia Department of Emergency Services as First Responders shall be issued a basic First Responder kit. It will include:
