Standard Operating Guidelines

Chapter 8: Truck Maintenance

Working Copy | Revised August, 2007

S.O.G.’s

Fort Blackmore VFD was formed in 1991. It has always sought to improve itself through training, resources, and fund raising. To improve its level of safety, these Standard Operating Guidelines are being revised. They are a work in progress. To ensure that procedures are created from standard firefighting practices, the IFSTA 4th Edition, was consulted. See Chapter 4 of these SOG’s for "Duties of Officers and Firefighters"

Truck Maintenance entails many elements. It is not possible to cover all elements on the maintenance and upkeep of trucks. The truck’s original maintenance manual should be consulted as much as possible Because of FBVFD’s limited range of experience, and the limited experience of each Firefighter, a comprehensive Truck Maintenance Schedule cannot be applied. The Fire Department will rely on fire department members, local mechanics, and professional fire truck companies to help maintain her trucks.

Truck Maintenance Officer [ TMO ]

The Chief is the head of the maintenance department. The Chief assigns a firefighter to help maintain each truck. This firefighter is to coordinate with the Truck Maintenance Officer. This officer is elected from the general Firefighter membership during normal elections. His/her duties are to see that Fort Blackmore’s trucks operate in as smooth and efficient a style as possible The Chief’s word is the final "say so".

The TMO may be an officer or a firefighter. This TMO shall oversee the maintenance of the trucks. The TMO’s decisions should be in conjunction with the Chief, unless it is an operation decision and the Chief is not present. He/she may also designate a helper for each vehicle. The TMO will also be a truck driver, authorized to drive vehicles in the department by the Chief.
