EVDT / EVOC
The Emergency Vehicle Drivers
Training Course is sponsored by VFIS Insurance. The
Department has its own certified instructor to teach the Course.
The Course consists of Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel instruction.
The EVDT Course was last taught at Fort Blackmore VFD on
April, 2007. Members were certified or re-certified as
drivers. However, at the discretion of the Chief, only qualified,
experienced Firefighters are allowed to drive Emergency Vehicles.
The VFIS EVDT Course:
Classroom discussion includes federal and state laws that describe
how an Emergency Vehicle Operator shall respond during fire, non-fire,
and medical calls. The classroom also includes Standard Operating
Guideline development of certain aspects of driving. The class
also includes driver fitness, both mental and physical; pre-trip and
post-trip checklists; vehicle maintenance; etc.
The Behind-the-Wheel portion of the course allows the Firefighters to
actually drive a cone course. There is no time limit on the
course. At Fort Blackmore Fire Department, the Instructor will
stay until midnight until everyone is certified.
The Virginia Dept. of Fire Programs EVOC Course:
The Emergency
Vehicle Operators Class [EVOC] is run by the Virginia
Department of Fire Programs. Classes are held throughout the year
in various parts of the state. Certified Fire Programs Instructors
hold the classes at paid and volunteer departments in Virginia.
Efforts are being made by our Department to certify all our drivers
through EVOC3. EVOC1 is for Chief's Vehicles such as Suburbans and
Jeeps; EVOC2 is for Ambulance; EVOC3 is for Engine and Ladder Truck,
without tillerman; EVOC Aerial is for certification to operate a tower
and drive ladder trucks with a tillerman.
