Plain Language, NIMs, and Managing Your Incident |
|
| Recently, Plain Language has been the "buzz word" inside Fire Departments. NIMs would like us to use plain language in emergency responses. This is for "public safety", and also the safety of responding Firefighters. It is very important that all Scott County responders know and use common SOGs/SOPs, language, and procedures. "This is what NIMS and the Incident Command System (ICS) are all about", says FirefighterCloseCalls.com. We must be able to interface between departments. We need everyone, from the Fed on down to Fort Blackmore, to be able to speak together on the scene. "Plain language", is the Fed all the way down to us, being able to coordinate, no matter how big the scene is. The Responders from all different Departments doing different jobs [firefighters, rescue, EMTs] should be able to talk together on-scene and be able to instantly tell what each one is talking about. "Everyone has to speak the same language - plain English," says FirefighterCloseCalls.com. The use of plain language is a requirement for FY06 compliance with NIMS. 10-codes will not be done away with. By the Fall of 2006, our goal should be to make Plain Language our regular language for all emergency scenes. Fighting against Plain Language will result in the loss our federal preparedness funding. At the end of FY06, we shall try to be NIMS compliant. Compliance with NIMs isn't going to go out the window. It's here to stay. Thanks to
